So often we want to look to Heaven for help but have placed our desires on things of this Earth. Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.” The word blessed in this verse means happy, joyous, and spiritually prosperous, with life, joy, and satisfaction in God’s favor and salvation. This is what everyone is seeking yet we have forgotten that we have a part to play. Our part, as stated in this verse, is to hunger and thirst after righteousness. To hunger and thirst means to consider death more desirable than going without God’s will in life.
Football season is in full swing. All three of our sons are active in football and we love going to their games. However, God still has to come first. So many people will stay up late to watch a game and then be sleepy and lethargic in church service. People are more interested in talking about scores and records than about God. Jesus has provided us with His blood to save our souls from the depths of hell, yet we cannot even acknowledge Him in our lives. People will think nothing of giving a waitress at least 10% to 20% but bring God way less. Can you imagine standing before God Almighty having honored football or your waitress more than Him?
Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself also in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” We all have desires in our heart. Notice the condition in which we need to follow. We need to delight ourselves first in the Lord. The word delight in this verse means to be flexible and teachable. It means to be poured into a mold and take the shape of God’s Word. The Bible says that we are to be conformed into the image of Jesus himself. (Romans 8:29) If we are not passionate about the things of God, we will be without the power of God. Jesus set the example that we are to follow.
Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be unto you.” God knows we have need of natural things, even recreation time. In order to receive the blessings of God and have His highest and best in our lives, we need to make sure He is in first place in our lives.
